Studying Abroad in Europe – Myths and Reality

Studying abroad in Europe always comes with a reputation. Among all students the European study abroad programs are rarely mentioned without some of these words accompanying it: Beer! Shots! Party! Beach! Surf classes! Sangria! More Party! Drunk girls! Hot surfer guys! A beer at the beach. The essence of studying abroad? After all, the European study abroad program -- called "Erasmus" -- allows students from all over Europe to study in any other European country without paying anything. Moreover, you'll even get a financial aid ranging from 80 to 800 €uro (yeah, guess how much I got) depending on your [...]

Air Castles

I don't even know if "building air castles" is a proper English expression, but the German expression "Luftschlösser bauen" is a very fitting description of my life right now. Of course, I'm probably not the only clueless 25-year-old out there, who has absolutely no idea what to do with her life. But I don't even have the vaguest idea. So instead, I flee to hide in my shiny pretty air castles. Let me tell you how this usually works: On Thursday, a friend of mine posts photos of her New Zealand road trip on facebook. I research everything about a New [...]

New Year, New Attitude

I'm not the New-Year's-resolutiony type. Usually my gym related, or diligence related resolutions don't work out the way I planned it. So, over the last years I didn't think of any resolutions at all. But this time, I feel like I should change something. Not about my appearance, or style of studying, but about my attitude. As an introvert I mostly observe and think. I think a lot. I overthink things. I make easy things complicated. I procrastinate thinking about the difficult things. And thus I also happen to think a lot about the people I meet in my daily [...]

The 2012 Review: Photos, Numbers and Lessons

2012 has been quite the year for me. When I think back, it's crazy how it went by so fast - yes, such a cliché, I know. But there really has been a lot going on this year. It has been a year full of difficult decisions, travel, and life lessons. From finishing my amazing semester abroad in Portugal to starting Sateless Suitcase, my year had several ups and downs. Here is my summary of this year's numbers, photos - and a few (travel-related) lessons I learned. 2012's Monthly Numbers January Days spent in Portugal: 30. Sunny days in Portugal: 30. [...]

A Little German Christmas Market Competition

Although I didn't leave the borders of Germany in December, I traveled a lot. In Germany. My objective: Finding my favorite German Christmas market. So I explored the Christmas markets in five different cities and four different states. I didn't go for the markets in the big touristic cities (there is a lot of coverage on the markets of Munich, Berlin, or Nuremberg out there). I just tried to find my personal favorite German city in the Christmas season - the most festive atmosphere, the best food, the most authentic Christmas feeling, and of course the prettiest Christmas market... Bayreuth, [...]

A Tale of Temporariness

December is here after all. The festive but final month of the year. Here Germany it has been snowing since the very beginning of December, and I'm living in a true winter wonderland right now. Although it's so pretty and Christmassy outside, December also forces me to reflect on the almost past year. 2012 has been an exciting year for me. On my daily walks through the snowy woods however, I realize that this year totally didn't turn out the way I thought it would. If you had asked me what my future life would look like back on that [...]

Croatia – Endless Shades of Blue!

It's true what they say: The Adriatic Sea is so very blue it's unreal! While visiting Croatia, I couldn't get over how divine these blues were. Blue definitely is the color of Croatia: The water, the sky, the house doors - all blue, all in a different shade, all shimmering, all mesmerizing... See for yourself! My little collection of favorite pictures of Croatia's Endless Shades of Blue:

Around the World in 80 Coffees?!

When I was skimming through the pictures I took on my trips during the last year I realized that I developed a strange habit: I take pictures of my coffees. A lot. It may be an unconscious result of my addiction, but I consider coffee to be picture-worthy. And pretty. And very cultural. Are you aware that "Coffee" is one of the easiest words to learn in so many languages? Coffee, café (French, Portuguese, Spanish - all covered in one word!), caffè (Italian), Kaffee (German), koffie (Dutch), káva (Czech, Slovakian), kava (Croatian, Slovenian, Lithuanian - again, 3 languages, one word!), kaffe (Norwegian, Swedish), [...]

The Dilemma of (Fake) Fantasy Travel

I few weeks ago, I finally gave in to the social media circus and signed up for Pinterest. One of the very first things I did, naturally, was checking out the travel category. Besides the 4569 photos of different angles of the Eiffel Tower, I found places I've been to, places I'd like to go to, places I miss... I do love me some proper wanderlusting! Then, however, I stumbled over this gem: At first glimpse, I just thought "Oh my gosh! Where is this?? Need to go there ASAP!!", but then I read the picture's caption - Dublin, Ireland. I was [...]
