Photo Essay: The Most Perfect Beach Sunset

Call me corny, but there's nothing more romantic than a sunset on the beach. No matter how often I'm lucky enough to experience such a combination of two of the most gorgeous sides of nature, I'm always awestruck before this colorful beauty anew. This Picturesque Monday photo was taken in Caravelos, a little beach town close to Lisbon. And it has a little background story that makes it even more cheesy romantic: I was studying abroad in Portugal at the time and hadn't seen Steffen in two months. He came to visit me for a weekend in late October, and I [...]

The Broke Art Historian’s Guide to Sightseeing in London

When it comes to money, London has a horrible reputation. And it's true. When I learned how much rent my friend and host Sarah was paying for her shoe-box sized apartment, I couldn't believe it. Or when we bought a few groceries for breakfast -- fruit, cereal, yoghurt -- and paid more than 20 ₤. Without a doubt, London is just crazy expensive. However, this doesn't necessarily apply to sightseeing. (Unless of course you want a picture of you and wax-Britney-Spears. What can I say, you have your reasons, right?) Honestly though, I was positively surprised how much you can do [...]

Photo Essay: Books, Books, Books!

I love books. I'm a huge bookworm. And despite all the apparent benefits of Kindles and other e-Readers, I will never ever prefer an e-book over an actual one. I love the smell of books. I love the sounds when running through the pages. I love how a hardcover, or the pages feel. And - I think books are THE best fitment. Nothing makes an apartment more comfortable than books... Of course, book stores and libraries are the places I feel at home right away. One of the most amazing book stores I have been to so far, was Ler Devagar [...]

What Porto Really Is About – A Photo Essay

My beloved Lisbon and I have an ongoing love affair, which has lasted for years. But if I ever happened to cheat on Lisbon in a weak moment, it would be with Porto. That other great city, up in Portugal's north, where the people are even friendlier, the food is heartier, and the wine is even sweeter. The old wooden boats of the port wine cellars Porto is just adoringly Portuguese: Beautiful, at ease, a little slow. It is not a perfect city - the streets aren't free of dog poop, and most of the houses in the city are [...]

Photo Essay: Happy New Year!

After having gone through the highlights and memorable moments of 2012, after having written down the resolutions for 2013, the New Year is here after all! I'm sure 2013 will be a year for new experiences, challenges, and lessons for all of us! And what's next for me? Honestly - I don't know. In less than three months my Master's thesis is due. So I'm trying to focus on my university work for now, although my sateless travel urge can never be fully suppressed. I'm not booked for anything concrete in 2013 yet, but I'm planning for a few weekend [...]

New Year, New Attitude

I'm not the New-Year's-resolutiony type. Usually my gym related, or diligence related resolutions don't work out the way I planned it. So, over the last years I didn't think of any resolutions at all. But this time, I feel like I should change something. Not about my appearance, or style of studying, but about my attitude. As an introvert I mostly observe and think. I think a lot. I overthink things. I make easy things complicated. I procrastinate thinking about the difficult things. And thus I also happen to think a lot about the people I meet in my daily [...]

The 2012 Review: Photos, Numbers and Lessons

2012 has been quite the year for me. When I think back, it's crazy how it went by so fast - yes, such a cliché, I know. But there really has been a lot going on this year. It has been a year full of difficult decisions, travel, and life lessons. From finishing my amazing semester abroad in Portugal to starting Sateless Suitcase, my year had several ups and downs. Here is my summary of this year's numbers, photos - and a few (travel-related) lessons I learned. 2012's Monthly Numbers January Days spent in Portugal: 30. Sunny days in Portugal: 30. [...]

A Little German Christmas Market Competition

Although I didn't leave the borders of Germany in December, I traveled a lot. In Germany. My objective: Finding my favorite German Christmas market. So I explored the Christmas markets in five different cities and four different states. I didn't go for the markets in the big touristic cities (there is a lot of coverage on the markets of Munich, Berlin, or Nuremberg out there). I just tried to find my personal favorite German city in the Christmas season - the most festive atmosphere, the best food, the most authentic Christmas feeling, and of course the prettiest Christmas market... Bayreuth, [...]

The Street Art of Paris – In Pictures

I don't know how I discovered street art. Somehow it was suddenly there. Maybe I am just a lemming of a huge new hipster street art hype. But no matter how I came to like street art in the first place, I know I do. A lot. And Paris has plenty of street art. un regard est si vite arrivé - a glance happens quickly by MissTic During my first visit to Paris back in 2006, I was totally fascinated by the stencils of the French artist MissTic. Her art was omnipresent in Montmartre back then. So even without even [...]
