Photo Essay: Berlin’s East Side Gallery at Night

I was overwhelmed with all the options in Berlin. There is so much to do and see while in Berlin that you'll never have enough time to see it all. And this is especially true when it comes to art: Berlin has so many museums and galleries that it would take you a lifetime to see them all. All these museums and galleries combined with wonderful street art and an unstoppable artistic scene, make Berlin THE place to be when you're into art. As an art geek I couldn't have been more excited about going to Berlin this summer. Unfortunately, [...]

Photo Essay: The Transition Season

I'm a summer girl through and through, but as the leaves slowly start to change I'm reminded of how much I love fall. It's not only the beautiful bright orange leaves, the mysterious morning fog, and the smell of rain on the still slightly warm concrete of the streets -- it's the feeling of fall that I love. Somehow, fall is very melancholic time of the year. As the year is about to end, colors, memories, and warmth are fading away. The forests aren't as colorful as they will be in October, but the greens start to glimmer yellowish already. [...]

Photo Essay: The Castle of Braunfels

Usually, I don't like German clichés as I'm the walking opposite of a typical German (despite my hair color maybe): I don't eat meat, I prefer wine over beer, I'm horribly chaotic and I'm never ever on time. But I feel like there is one cliché about the country of Germany itself which really is true: Germany has an insane amount of castles. The little town where I went to school has a castle. I can see a castle from my parent's kitchen window. On the way to my summer job I drive by two other castles. During my undergrad [...]

A Walk Around Berlin’s Famous Sights

When I got to Berlin last month I wanted to find art, design, and hipster subculture. But somehow I got distracted by classical, historical, and beautiful Berlin. Berlin has experienced SO much history that you can't possibly grasp it during just one weekend, probably not even in a lifetime. But I wanted to stroll through the streets and find "the real" Berlin. While walking through Berlin, my mind was racing with images I remember from history books and TV reports: Swinging Berlin in the 20ies, shockingly impressive Nazi parades through the city's grand boulevards, entirely destroyed Berlin after the War. [...]

The Art Historian’s Failed Guide to Hipster Berlin

I already had the words formed in my head before I even arrived in Berlin. Maybe that was a mistake in the first place. The Art Historian's Guide to Hipster Berlin. I was convinced I could write this. I exactly knew what this post was supposed to be like. I wanted to write about street art and those cool coffee shops were you can buy coffee as well as the mug your coffee's served in and the chair you’re sitting on. I wanted to write about Berlin the party capital, where every café serves breakfast until 7 pm so you will [...]

Photo Essay: Picture-Perfect Potsdam

This past weekend I escaped on a spontaneous weekend trip to Berlin and its famous neighboring city Potsdam. Before I start putting my overwhelming Berlin impressions into words I wanted to introduce the beautiful city of Potsdam -- to give it the attention it deserves. Potsdam was the royal residency of the kingdom of Prussia and the former royal glamour can be seen all over the city. Potsdam is dominated by palaces and parks that have been proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1990ies. Although the city center itself is gorgeously renovated, the most renowned part of Potsdam [...]

Photo Essay: Summer in Germany

I don't really share a lot about what my life looks like when I don't travel. I currently live in-between Cologne and Frankfurt, in the official middle of nowhere -- and I don't consider my life to be really interesting right now, because it consists out of two things: Waiting for my Master's thesis evaluation coming in so that I can finally start planning my very last oral exam, and working. Yes, after "traveling up" all my savings this year I'm working full-time again. Don't worry, it's only for the summer and I'm not becoming a grown-up just yet. But I [...]

Photo Essay: Baroque (but Beautiful) Karlsruhe

To be honest, Baroque is so NOT my favorite art historical epoch. Baroque paintings are just heavy fabrics, surreal clouds, intense colors, and full cleavages. Baroque architecture is full of patterned marble and fat gold baby angels. For me, Baroque is simply always over the top. Although I love churches and could usually stay for hours, Baroque churches have the tendency to scare me away after a few minutes, because it's just too much gold and kitsch for my eyes. But there is one exception to my Baroque aversion: Castles and palaces! Castles are allowed to have a lot of [...]

Photo Essay: Castle Views from Nuremberg

When I introduced the beautiful city of Nuremberg with its difficult history, I left out the little detail about my accommodation there. But actually -- where I stayed, was one of the highlights of my recent trip to Nuremberg: I slept in a castle hostel! The city's youth hostel is located in the former hayloft of Nuremberg's iconic castle. Archeological findings on the castle hill date back until the 11th century, first written account of the castle's existence and its use as a royal residence is proofed since the mid of the 12th century. The history of the castle and [...]

Nuremberg – Franconia’s Historical Treasure Chest

Nuremberg is one of those cities which are love at first sight. As soon as you pass through the main entrance door of the train station, your eyes fall upon the late medieval town fortification and into the cobblestone streets lined with half-timbered houses leading into the old city center... Yes, Nuremberg, you had me at hello. But to really understand this city, there is a lot to know -- from a gloomy history to quirky regional and dialect pride to famous little sausages. First, a little note on regional mentality: Although Nuremberg is geographically located in the German state [...]
