“Art history? So can you paint really well?”

When you specialize in humanities you get asked a lot of weird questions. Sometimes I have the feeling that when people ask what you're studying, they want to hear something simple, something they understand: Say "psychology" or "business administration" and people are happy. They know you'll end up having a proper job. But when you're asked for your major and answer "English literature and art history", people are confused and immediately assume: "To be a teacher, right?!". Because teacher is a proper job. You'd be providing knowledge for kids. That's a decent way to earn your money. I however did [...]

Photo Essay: The Transition Season

I'm a summer girl through and through, but as the leaves slowly start to change I'm reminded of how much I love fall. It's not only the beautiful bright orange leaves, the mysterious morning fog, and the smell of rain on the still slightly warm concrete of the streets -- it's the feeling of fall that I love. Somehow, fall is very melancholic time of the year. As the year is about to end, colors, memories, and warmth are fading away. The forests aren't as colorful as they will be in October, but the greens start to glimmer yellowish already. [...]

One Year: A Blogiversary

I can't even believe it myself: Sateless Suitcase went live a year ago today. A platform for random travel-related musings of a clueless almost art historian -- which I basically just started, because I really love procrastination. At least, I think that was my intention at first. I still remember how I excited I was when the very first person accidently stumbled upon my blog. It overwhelmed me that someone would actually care about what I have to say. Since then, Sateless Suitcase and I have come quite a long way: Both still kind of clueless and still unsure of [...]

Capture the Color: My 2013 Travel Photos

I don't need a reason to go through my travel photos every once in a while: I love images, and I always love a little trip down memory lane. So when Alex, my favorite Texan expat in Germany, tagged me to be a part in this year's Capture the Color Photo Contest, I was excited to go through my photos once more. In this contest, participants choose one photo for each primary color. I however, chose a few more photos to mirror my favorite destinations of 2013 thus  far (although I violate the contest's rules) -- each destination, depicted in [...]

Photo Essay: Musée Rodin in Paris

Paris has some of the most amazing museums of the world, and when re-visited Paris for the third time earlier this summer, I challenged myself to see as many museums as possible. But the weather was so perfect that I didn't want spend too much time inside crowded and gloomy museum hallways -- summer in Paris is just too magical to not experience it outside. So I was really glad when my lovely museum date Edna suggested that we should go see Musée Rodin. This museum in the 7th arrondissement wasn't originally on the list of museums I wanted to [...]

Six Helpful Little Travel Items

Normally, I'm not one for the what’s-in-my-bag kind of blog posts. But recently a friend asked me for packing advice, because after all, I am writing a travel blog, right? Well, I mentioned it here and there already: I no packing genius. I always wait until the very last second and then throw a whole bunch of unnecessary "just in case"-stuff into my suitcase. Just like you shouldn't do. But beside all the packing-drama-queen-ness, I know which little things I really need to pack for city trips, European getaways, or a semester abroad. And I'm willing to share my little [...]

Photo Essay: The Island of Krk

A few days ago I started skimming through the photos I took in Croatia last fall, and I realized that I really miss Croatia. The warm sunshine, the smell of pine woods, the soft clicking sound of the walnuts falling off trees at night, the delicious nutty pastries, and strong coffees. Last year was my first time in Croatia and I must admit that I was skeptical at first. There was such much fuss about Croatia throughout the last years, that I really don't know anyone who hasn't loved Croatia. For me, it was almost hyped a little too much. [...]

How To Cope with Europe in the Rain

I love living and traveling in Europe. But to be honest, when it comes to weather -- Central Europe is not the Caribbean or South America. You can never really rely on the weather. Especially during transition seasons it is really tricky to pack for traveling around Europe. And I have seen way too many girls traveling in ballet flats when it was freezing outside, and way too many guys bringing only shorts to a Euro trip in September. September is still supposed to be summery in Central Europe, right? Well, not necessarily. The weather in countries like Holland, Switzerland, [...]

Photo Essay: The Castle of Braunfels

Usually, I don't like German clichés as I'm the walking opposite of a typical German (despite my hair color maybe): I don't eat meat, I prefer wine over beer, I'm horribly chaotic and I'm never ever on time. But I feel like there is one cliché about the country of Germany itself which really is true: Germany has an insane amount of castles. The little town where I went to school has a castle. I can see a castle from my parent's kitchen window. On the way to my summer job I drive by two other castles. During my undergrad [...]

A Walk Around Berlin’s Famous Sights

When I got to Berlin last month I wanted to find art, design, and hipster subculture. But somehow I got distracted by classical, historical, and beautiful Berlin. Berlin has experienced SO much history that you can't possibly grasp it during just one weekend, probably not even in a lifetime. But I wanted to stroll through the streets and find "the real" Berlin. While walking through Berlin, my mind was racing with images I remember from history books and TV reports: Swinging Berlin in the 20ies, shockingly impressive Nazi parades through the city's grand boulevards, entirely destroyed Berlin after the War. [...]
