Photo Essay: Fall in Germany

About two months ago, I wrote a photo essay on the transition season that was about to start. Back then, the leaves hadn't really turned yet, and change was only a faint scent in the far distance. The subtle presentiment of change filled me with fear and excitement at the same time. Today, I look out of the window and the transition season has passed. The trees have no leaves anymore, the days grow shorter and chillier, and the layers of cloths become thicker every day. The season of changes is almost over, but I'm not ready to let go. [...]

The Challenges of Starting Over

To warn you straight away, I'm a drama queen. I always feel like the things I have to live through are worse than what people with similar issues have to go through. Maybe I feel things more intense, maybe I just need a whole lot of sympathy, maybe I'm just too whiny or too egocentric. I don't know. But I do know that this last month was a tough month for me: I'm in the middle of starting over. I've been vague about what's been going on in my life, because I still haven't processed it myself. And I'm still [...]

On Life and Blogging Lessons – My BlogHouse Ireland Experience

I didn't know this when I started Sateless Suitcase, but the world of travel blogging is a world of many rules. There's an uncountable amount of social media dos and don'ts as well as writing rules. One crucial writing rule is "Don't use those cliché expressions like 'amazing' or 'hidden gem'". Obviously, I break that rule all the time. Because in my opinion, the world is full of amazing hidden gems. And, I'm about to break another one of those rules: "Don't write about travel blogging on your travel blog". I will do that now, although I'm aware that it [...]

Photo Essay: Malahide – An Irish Castle Dream

I'm not a person who is easily impressed when it comes to castles. I mean, I love castles. How could I not? But my home country has approximately 25,000 of them, so it takes something special to catch my eye. But then Ireland happened. Ireland's castles are defensive, eerie, and mysterious. They don't look like something straight out of a fairy tale. They seem darker, because they have fewer windows and there a often ruinous remains of churches and cemeteries nearby. Malahide Castle about 30 minutes north of Dublin is no exception: It's everything you'd want an Irish castle to [...]

The Art Historian’s Guide to Falling in Love with Frankfurt

It's awkwardly quiet on the train leaving Frankfurt main station on this Tuesday afternoon considering there's no empty seat left. People are even standing in the hallways, but they are quietly looking at their phones, or reading. Rarely anyone speaks. I watch the long shadows created by the late afternoon September sun fly by the window and wonder: What is it that fascinates me about the city I just left? A city that apparently doubles its population during office hours? The people around me wear dark suits and expensive bags. They are business people working in finances and investment banking. [...]

Photo Essay: Dublin in the Rain

You know I don't mind a little rain while traveling in Europe: There's rarely anything you can do against it except enjoying for the melancholic beauty it creates. I knew I would have to cope with quite a lot of rain when I booked my trip to Ireland -- it has to be called The Emerald Isle for a reason, right? I packed my usual "rain uniform", but actually, it wasn't all that bad in the end. There were even a few times where I could actually wear my sunglasses. However, rain was always present somehow: People carrying umbrellas, houses reflecting [...]

Ireland via Instagram

Ireland. Just wow. Sorry for the lack of descriptive adjectives (I really should know better by now), but I was most definitely just wowed by this country -- in the best possible way! I got back from Ireland less than 48 hours ago and already dream of going back. I pretty much expected to find mostly sheep, green meadows, and drizzle in Ireland, but what I actually got was amazing people, gorgeous landscapes, and impressive architecture. It will take weeks (and several posts and photo essays) to recap my wonderful time in Ireland, but for now I just want to [...]

Photo Essay: Midnight in Paris

First of all, sorry for the cheesy title. As I literature and art geek I obviously loved Woody Allen's movie and I honestly wish I could time-travel to Paris of the fabulous 1920ies. But the movie aside, these photos were literally taken at midnight in Paris. My whole day in Paris was already perfect: I strolled along Canal Saint-Martin at noon and spent the afternoon in the shade underneath the Eiffel Tower picnicking with friends for no less than five hours. After watching the sunset at Champs de Mars, my friend Edna and I strolled along the lively streets of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, [...]

What’s Next: Travel, Life, Future

A while back I promised big news on my facebook page. And here they finally are. Well, they might not be big news to anyone else, but they are to me -- and Sateless Suitcase of course. I'm done with my Master's Degree! Last week I had to "defend" my Master's Thesis -- my very last examination! And I passed!! Yes, I'm officially done with my Master's!! Can you believe it? After studying for six years and suffering through a seemingly endless depressing thesis writing winter, it's finally over! And since German universities rarely have graduation ceremonies, let alone caps [...]

Photo Essay: Berlin’s East Side Gallery at Night

I was overwhelmed with all the options in Berlin. There is so much to do and see while in Berlin that you'll never have enough time to see it all. And this is especially true when it comes to art: Berlin has so many museums and galleries that it would take you a lifetime to see them all. All these museums and galleries combined with wonderful street art and an unstoppable artistic scene, make Berlin THE place to be when you're into art. As an art geek I couldn't have been more excited about going to Berlin this summer. Unfortunately, [...]
