On Wasting The Twenties

Maybe I'm a bit too dramatic about numbers, but I'm turning 27 in a week and I somehow I'm afraid of turning older yet again. It's not that I'm afraid of growing older in general, or getting wrinkles, but of the thought that I will soon be categorized as a 'girl in her late-twenties'. However, it's not the term "late-twenties" alone that makes me anxious, but comparing myself with others my age and younger: There are so many people out there who know what they want in their late-twenties, who have achieved things I don't even dare to dream of. Of [...]

Life, Travel, and Finding Balance

Admittedly, my travel life has been quite dull lately. I'm truly not happy with that. Plus, it's really not helpful when writing a blog in the travel niche either. We all know that I can't keep up with the long term travelers anyway, but I still feel like I need to justify why I haven't been anywhere exciting ever since last fall. But you know, somehow, life got in the way of travel these past months. I know, I know, there are hundreds of lists and articles out there in the blogoshere naming all the lame excuses for people not [...]

New Year, New Unpredictability

It's both beautiful and terrifying, the idea of a blank page. All empty and untouched, meaning anything could happen. A full range of possibilities. And yet, endless possibilities also leave room for fear, doubt, and that stupefying feeling of being simply overwhelmed with everything that could be done. Where to start? The first sentence is always the hardest one, and the sight of a blank page is not always easy. But as soon as you're over the obstacle of that first blank page, those other 364 pages will fill up steadily. I love the thought of a blank page, a [...]

My 2013 Highlights via Instagram

I've done a lot of review posts this year and you might hate me for it already. Fair enough. But I love reading reviews and I also love writing them. The idea of the year ending makes me nostalgic. I like reminiscing. And honestly, I'm one of those 21st century people with the attention span of a Buzzfeed list -- I mean, what offers more entertainment than a list of photos with witty headlines? Especially during the holidays when there's not much time to spend hours reading online in-between all the family dinners? I'm won't go all "27 Inappropriate Outfits [...]

All You Need to Know about German Christmas Markets

I won't lie, winter in Central Europe is not fun. It's dark, it's cold, it's depressing. The sun sets in the afternoon and most daytime is spent inside with the lights on. It usually only starts snowing when Christmas is over and when everybody is ready for spring. (The heaviest snow storms I experienced actually happened in April!) And no, it's not romantic and cozy to freeze in the dark. The longer winter lasts, the crankier people around you become in Central Europe. However, there is one tiny exception to all the Central Europe wintertime depression: Those four weeks before [...]

Around the World in Coffees: The 2013 Edition

About one year ago, I collected all my coffee photos from my previous years of travel and combined them in a photo essay called "Around the World in 80 Coffees". This post didn't cover the whole world, nor 80 coffees, but it presented a view of the world through the eyes someone who loves coffee and travel equally. From fantastic Portuguese galois on the beach to spectacularly good espressos in hip London coffee shops like Prufrock, 2012 was a great year in "caffeine travel" for me. So I ended my 2012 coffee post with the resolution to travel more and [...]

A New Beginning

A while ago, I read an article on some kind of semi-dubious internet site introducing a study on the latest posts of all WordPress blogs out there (at least, that's what I remember the article being about). Interestingly enough, two thirds of all the blogs out there had their latest post starting with "Sorry I haven't posted in a while". I immediately swore to myself that I would never start I post like that. If only to not appear in this kind of statistics. But well, sometimes, life simply gets in the way of writing and creativity -- and I [...]

The Challenges of Starting Over

To warn you straight away, I'm a drama queen. I always feel like the things I have to live through are worse than what people with similar issues have to go through. Maybe I feel things more intense, maybe I just need a whole lot of sympathy, maybe I'm just too whiny or too egocentric. I don't know. But I do know that this last month was a tough month for me: I'm in the middle of starting over. I've been vague about what's been going on in my life, because I still haven't processed it myself. And I'm still [...]

On Life and Blogging Lessons – My BlogHouse Ireland Experience

I didn't know this when I started Sateless Suitcase, but the world of travel blogging is a world of many rules. There's an uncountable amount of social media dos and don'ts as well as writing rules. One crucial writing rule is "Don't use those cliché expressions like 'amazing' or 'hidden gem'". Obviously, I break that rule all the time. Because in my opinion, the world is full of amazing hidden gems. And, I'm about to break another one of those rules: "Don't write about travel blogging on your travel blog". I will do that now, although I'm aware that it [...]

What’s Next: Travel, Life, Future

A while back I promised big news on my facebook page. And here they finally are. Well, they might not be big news to anyone else, but they are to me -- and Sateless Suitcase of course. I'm done with my Master's Degree! Last week I had to "defend" my Master's Thesis -- my very last examination! And I passed!! Yes, I'm officially done with my Master's!! Can you believe it? After studying for six years and suffering through a seemingly endless depressing thesis writing winter, it's finally over! And since German universities rarely have graduation ceremonies, let alone caps [...]
