Photo Essay: The Best of Spring 2016

A while ago, I stumbled upon a quote saying something like "whenever you want to say that you don't have time, say you don't want to make it a priority instead". It may sound harsh, but it's shockingly true: You can always make time for things that are a priority. And yes, in the last months, blogging was not a priority for me. To be honest, I don't feel the need to justify this priority shift. But maybe this summary of my spring 2016 can explain why I preferred to live offline for a change, and why it took me this [...]

Photo Essay: The Best of February 2016

You know, I wouldn't even care if we had just skipped February altogether. Seriously, the month of February is just miserable in Central Europe -- and it's probably even worse in Northern Germany, because if the sun ever shows she does it in Southern Germany. Anyways, besides my best efforts and resolutions to stay positive, I turned into a proper grump towards the end of the month. I can't even find the right words to explain just how over freezing non-stop drizzle I am. I know, I sound like a sun-deprived crazy person, but honestly, that's what a February like this [...]

Photo Essay: The Best of January 2016

First of all, I didn't mean to skip my December round-up, but I was so busy with domestic travel and holiday events that I didn't find the time to write a single word. Then, January just swept over me in no time and December (and 2015 in general) already felt like it was such a long time ago. January was a bit of a strange month -- it was slow, gray, sleepy, busy, and the weather went from -14 degrees Celsius and snow storms to +12 degrees and non-stop April rain within a week. Travel Whereas in December I traveled more [...]

Photo Essay: The Best of November 2015

One Friday in November, I came home from work late. I was crashed and frustrated, because I too often feel like it's impossible to keep up with all the smart and insanely ambitious people around me. I sat on the kitchen table for an hour that Friday, still wearing my winter coat, questioning everything I had done in my life so far. I got myself together after a while, and decided to distract myself with some stupid TV shows when a news app let my phone buzz: There were reports of several shootings in Paris. There was so much uncertainty at first, but with [...]

Photo Essay: The Best of October 2015

I have a love/hate relationship with October: When the sun is out and the foliage glows all technicolor in golden light, I swear that October is my favorite month of the year. But when it's foggy and gloomy for days and I have to go grocery shopping in the dark because the sun sets at 5pm (thanks to daylight savings), I don't even know how I'm supposed to make it through the next months of darkness and subzero temperatures. This October already provided pretty much everything regarding weather options: Fog, wind, sleet, drizzle, snow (!!) -- but also a few days [...]

Photo Essay: The Best of September 2015

September started like every month should start: In white hotel linen and a salty breeze from the Mediterranean pouring in through the open balcony doors, softly moving the light curtains. Starting the month on a high note though, always means there's the potential for disappointment. Overall, September was not a bad month, not at all, but going back to the same old day to day routine after two weeks of vacation bliss was definitely a little challenge. Travel Turkey was incredible. All I wanted was relaxation and lying on the beach without even thinking of my computer. And it was basically already the best. But getting [...]

Photo Essay: The Best of August 2015

I had planned for August to be a slow month. With a lot of time for reading and writing and concentrating. August in a German university town like Göttingen means the city is pretty empty and the supermarkets actually still have frozen pizza on stock, which would never happen during the semester. Life feels a little more relaxed and quiet in August. In some ways August really was a slow month -- except that I barely spent a weekend at home. Travel Ever since my last visit to Paris back in June 2013, I've been wanting to return. Paris is [...]

Photo Essay: The Best of July 2015

As the amount of blog posts I managed to finish in July already implies: It was a very busy month. (In my defense though: Composing that huge Jordan photo essay took me about three weeks, so I hope you'll forgive me that it was otherwise a bit too quiet over here). There was a crazy lot of stuff going on at work last month, but I also had a social life every once in a while. And I mean, if it happens to be one of Germany's rare summer days and you're invited to a barbecue, you really don't want [...]

Photo Essay: The Best of June 2015

June was a mess. I was really looking forward to June, but it was a messy month. My financial situation (too broke after May travels), my social media channels (too neglected), my hair (too long), my apartment (too dusty), my thoughts (too much going on) -- everything was pure chaos. I thought May had had its depressing times, but sadly, June was even worse. Summer came to Germany to tease us for four glorious days, but just when I was getting ready to paint my toe nails to officially wear sandals again, summer was gone again already. Gray skies, rain, and early March [...]

Photo Essay: The Best of May 2015

I feel like being a little too redundant with starting off this monthly recap with the same cliché I used for my April wrap-up, but it just sounds so adequate this time around as well: May was a month of quite a few ups and downs regrading life, weather, and emotional states. But if writing monthly round-up posts has taught me anything yet, then that life is just like a constant roller coaster ride sometimes. Maybe this is just the reality of 20-something life. Maybe this is even just life in general. But how would we even notice the highlights if there [...]
